Forehand Master Class – Key Coaching Points
During this session, we focused on the fundamentals of a modern, solid, and effective forehand, emphasizing consistency, topspin, and fluid mechanics.
1️⃣ Setting Up the Correct Grip
The Semi-Western Grip
We kicked off by making sure everyone was using the correct Semi-Western Grip. It's the standard for modern power and spin, which gives players a great angle to lift the ball over the net with heavy topspin.
Our Simple Drill:
To find it easily, remember our trick: place your racket on the court and simply pick it up. The 'V' shape your thumb and index finger make should sit on the grip. The web of skin between your thumb and index finger should sit perfectly on the grip.
Crucial tip – Keep it Loose
The most important thing to remember is to keep a relaxed hold on the racket during the preparation and the swing. Gripping too hard restricts your wrist movement and causes tension in your arm, which completely kills your racket head speed. Absolutely no squeezing!
2️⃣ The Motion: the “C” Swing
Turn & Prepare
Before you even think about swinging, we need that sideways shoulder turn. Get your shoulders turned sideways, so that your opponent can only see one of your shoulders. This action allows you to use your entire body in the forehand rather than just your arm; it also engages your legs and core.
The big take-back
We focused on making that first part of the swing a long and relaxed 'C' shape. The racket needs to be pulled back towards the back of the court in one fluid motion.
The Strings rule
Keep those strings pointing down towards the court during the entire motion. This ensures the racket drops below the ball's height, which sets up perfectly the essential low-to-high path that generates spin and consistency.
3️⃣ Essential Finish: Finish High and Through the Ball
The swing isn't over until the racket is high! Make sure you finish the racket right up over your opposite shoulder (the left shoulder for right-handers). A high finish will ensure you drive through the ball completely, this along with a long swing, will ensure your ball goes over the net.
🎯 Session Objectives
✔ Semi-Western Grip and keep it loose
